Having cared for people all her life, Luta Taufisitule knew providing homecare for Pacific people in her community was right for her. As a valued member of Pacific Homecare, Luta is November’s Employee of the Month.
Luta Taufisitule was born in Niue and moved to New Zealand at the age of six.
After mainly working in retail the mother of five joined Pacific Homecare in 2011.
She heard about the organisation through a cousin who suggested she would be a perfect Support Worker. Luta didn’t hesitate.
“I have always looked after people my whole life – my children and my grandkids – so it was a job I knew I could do well.”
Luta has eight permanent clients, all of whom she is very fond of.
“You get attached to them, and they almost become like your family.”
Besides her regular clients, Luta also cares for others, keeping her busy all week.
Her role involves preparing meals, providing personal care as well as taking her clients out shopping.
One client she has particularly grown close to is a 23-year-old woman who has cerebral palsy. Luta has cared for her since she started working at Pacific Homecare.
“I see her as my daughter, so I have gotten very attached to her. I love how she lights up when I spend time with her,” she recalls.
The dedicated employee enjoys her job and is grateful for the learning experience Pacific Homecare has provided.
“Pacific Homecare has given me lots of staff training and I have my gotten level one, two and three certificates in caring skills.”
Caring for her clients is also a very rewarding experience.
“It’s also nice to see the love your clients have for you. The clients treat you as a part of their family.”
The news that she was the Employee of the Month for November was shocking but exciting.
“At first I didn’t know what to think because I didn’t expect it,” she says.
“But of course I was excited and happy.”
