Two of our newest Support Workers, Lorainna and Miriama, a dynamic sister duo hailing from Fiji, graciously shared their experiences with us. Arriving from Suva in October last year, they embarked on a new chapter in Aotearoa, finding themselves both challenged and enchanted by the cultural transition.
Formerly employed as nurses in a bustling hospital in Suva, Lorainna and Miriama were helped into their roles by a cousin who is also a current employee at PHC. Reflecting on their journey, they highlight the significant technological advancements in New Zealand, particularly in healthcare, which have considerably eased their workload. Lorainna elaborates, “In Fiji, we often had to manually lift patients without the aid of hoists or adjustable beds. The introduction of equipment such as the hoist here has improved our work environment, sparing us from the strain on our backs.”
With aspirations to obtain their New Zealand Nurse’s registration in the coming year, Lorainna and Miriama have dreams of someday working in one of Auckland’s bustling hospitals. Lorainna’s has a special in Intensive Care work, while Miriama is drawn to surgical nursing.
Their enthusiasm for their current role at PHC is very evident. The sisters have noted the friendliness among colleagues and the diverse array of clients, each with their unique preferences and needs. They are also beaming with the better remuneration Aotearoa has to offer. Miriama gleefully remarks, “We can indulge in shopping and buy more clothes, a luxury we couldn’t afford before!” Additionally, Lorainna notes that their newfound financial stability has enabled them to purchase their first personal vehicle, a milestone they cherish deeply.
Their journey embodies resilience, ambition, and gratitude, as they embrace the opportunities and joys that come with their newfound life in New Zealand.
