Finding ways to support families who need our help has been the focal point for our Whānau Ora team. Navigator Epenesa completed a three-day Healthy Homes initiative training and can now work with families eligible for this support. Recently, Epenesa visited our Fia Ola groups, where she presented the initiative, saying, “It’s great to see how these resources make a real difference in creating healthier homes”.
The Healthy Homes Initiative (HHI) helps improve housing conditions for vulnerable families by providing support such as insulation, heating, and ventilation to reduce health risks from cold, damp homes.
Epenesa works alongside the AWHI team and has referred around 30 families, all of whom have been supported with essential appliances like new thermal curtains and heaters and have had Kāinga Ora speed up maintenance in some of the houses. Over this time, they have helped numerous families, primarily those with children under five, pregnant women, or people with respiratory conditions. Eligibility is based on health needs and housing conditions. Families who rent, own their home or live in a Kāinga Ora property are eligible if they have permanent residency or citizenship.
With winter approaching, the team wants to ensure your house is warm for you and your aiga. To see if you’re eligible for support, please contact whanauorateam@pacifichomecare.org.nz or phone 0800 294 262.
