Coming from humble beginnings on the island of Tofoa in Tonga, Sela’s road to becoming a Support Worker was a personal one. After her mother suffered two strokes, Sela became a full time carer for her through Pacific Homecare. After her passing, Sela embarked on her own journey to become a Support Worker.

Tell us a little bit about your background:
Born and raised on Tofoa Tonga, I moved to New Zealand after the death of my father. I married while in NZ and had children of my own. After my mother suffered a second stroke I stayed home and became her full-time carer with the help of Pacific Homecare. After she passed away I decided to become a Support Worker.
What sorts of things do you do in your job?
I help clients with their personal tasks, household tasks and strengthening them to become more independent. Where possible I like to share messages of love with clients in order to make their day.
Tell us about a normal day in your job?
I help my clients physically in any way I can to achieve their tasks. My favourite time would be when I get down time with them. These moments are of the greatest value as I get to grow closer to the family and the client.
What training have you completed at Pacific Homecare?
I completed Level 2, and am currently undertaking Level 3 and Everyday Leadership Training.
What do you like most about working at Pacific Homecare?
I like working with a variety of people and having to make a difference in their lives. The moment I can see the happiness in my clients’ eyes I know I’ve done a good job.
Who inspires you?
Jesus. His truth and guidance is what I wake up for. When I receive the word for the day it gives me the strength to get up and know what my purpose is. I carry around a favourite passage from 1 Corinthian 10:31 with me daily, and use it in everything I do.
At the end of your working day, what do you like to do?
After a long hard day I like to return home, kick my feet up and listen to gospel music. I find that this is the most therapeutic way to unwind.
