I’m an NZ born Tongan who was born and raised in Mangere. I’m the second eldest of 6 – with 4 sisters and 1 brother. I attended St Josephs Convent School and McAuley High School in Otahuhu. I went on to Auckland Uni initially to study Law and Arts but then decided after 4 years that higher education wasn’t for me. I lived in Australia for a year “to find my calling in life” and then on returning worked in the hospitality and communications industry until I had my first child in 2004.
In 2009 after having my second child, my oldest sister who is intellectually disabled, fell very ill and needed full-time care. I became her carer alongside my mum and worked under the Pacific Homecare (PHC) umbrella as her support worker.
Last November I was offered the role of Field Coordinator which at first I declined due to being hesitant about abandoning my sisters care, but after a lot of encouragement from my mum and husband to take on the challenge (as well as Louise not taking no for an answer lol ) I started a new chapter in the PHC office.
Initially employed as a field coordinator, I was asked not long after I started, to be a part of the Resource Team. My primary responsibility is the support workers’ rosters and finding relievers in the absence of the permanent support worker due to sickness or leave. I also source support workers for new customers that come on board for service according to availability and time that new customers need their care
Most days start the same where at 7 am when I arrive at the office I clear any voicemails which have been left outside of office hours. Typically, these are made up of clients leaving messages regarding their service or support workers not able to attend work for the day.
The busyness of my day depends on how many support workers are away but in saying that every day is busy as there is always support workers going on planned leave so their clients also need care in their absence from relievers
Earlier this year I attended the Everyday Leaders Training – highly recommended to all!
I love interacting with our support workers and our customers!! I believe I have built a lot of good relationships with our staff both inside and outside of the office and admire the work ethic that everyone has.
I also understand how many of our customers depend on PHC to help them on a daily basis, so I place a lot of importance in ensuring that we are able to deliver the best service that we can.
My parents are and have always been my constant source of inspiration. They came to NZ in the early 60s individually to pursue the migrant dream of a better life.
They met here in NZ and got married and through their tireless hard work and determination they have been able to make their migrant dream come true – and even though they have reached their retirement age they are still encouraging my siblings and I to work hard and give our own children a better life than what they gave us
Ahhhhh now that’s easy!! I love to relax and unwind when I get home with a chilled pinot gris (and in the colder months pinot noir) while making dinner then helping my kids with their homework
